How Pro Tools keeps your plugins

Pro Tools lists plugins in the Insert selector of each track, and three things shape that list.

Plugin menus

By category, by maker, or both

Display preferences set the menu: a flat list, by category, by manufacturer, or both. The category is the one each plugin's developer gave it, and a plugin without one lands in Other.

Favorites

Marked by hand

Command-click an Insert selector and choose a plugin to make it a favorite. Favorites sit at the top of the menu, and in bold in their category.

Insert search

Type a few letters

Click an Insert selector and type. The menu narrows to the plugins whose names include those letters, up to 20, and Return inserts the one you pick.

All three find a plugin by its name, one Insert selector at a time.

Everything you own, already organized.

Plugindex fills in your library from Pro Tools' own insert menus, so it knows every plugin Pro Tools can load.

Every plugin, as a picture

Plugindex photographs each plugin's window for you, Avid's own and everything you installed. There is nothing to mark as a favorite first.

Filter by what it does

Compressors, limiters, reverbs, delays: sorted for you, down to the type, whatever category its maker gave it. Or type a few letters of a name or a maker and the grid comes down to it.

A click or a key puts it on the track

Click a plugin, or press the key you gave it. An effect lands in the selected track's next free insert, without you opening a menu.

An instrument gets a new track when the selected one already has one. Settings can make that always, or never.

The same key in your other DAWs

Give a plugin a key in Pro Tools. The same key loads it in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Nuendo, Bitwig Studio, REAPER and Studio Pro, wherever that plugin is installed.

See what runs where

Plugindex tells you when a key only works in the DAW you're in. Logic Pro is Mac only.

Set up once, in three steps.

  1. Allow Plugindex to control Pro Tools Press Grant, then switch on the row named Plugindex in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility. It is how a plugin lands on the track.
  2. Open a session in Pro Tools Any session. Plugindex notices it and fills in your plugin list by itself, on a scratch track it takes away after. Before Pro Tools 2025.10 Open a session with at least one track, then press My session is open.
  3. Press Index Plugindex photographs each plugin. macOS asks you to allow the photographs first.

Every step and fix for Pro Tools

The Plugindex menu. Setup & connection… shows these steps one at a time, and says when Pro Tools is connected.
