How FL Studio keeps your plugins

FL Studio has a Plugin database in its Browser, and three parts of it do the work.

Plugin database

Everything FL has found

After a scan, every plugin is listed under Installed, split into Effects and Generators, then by format. The Browser's search finds one by name.

Favorites

Organized by hand

The Effects and Generators folders above Installed are your favorites. Open a plugin, open the folder you want it in, and choose Add to plugin database from its menu, which saves its thumbnail. Or tick favorites in the Plugin Manager, without thumbnails.

Plugin picker

F8, from your favorites

A grid of what you have favorited. Type to narrow it, then drag a plugin out or double-click it: an effect goes to the selected mixer track, an instrument to a new channel.

FL's own plugins arrive organized, with thumbnails. Everything you install waits under Installed, by name, until you organize it.

Everything you own, already organized.

Plugindex starts from FL's own Plugin database, so it knows every plugin FL has found.

Every plugin, as a picture

Plugindex photographs each plugin's window for you, FL's own and everything you installed. There is nothing to favorite first.

Filter by what it does

Compressors, limiters, reverbs, delays: sorted for you, down to the type. Or type a few letters of a name or a maker and the grid comes down to it.

A click or a key puts it on the insert

Click a plugin, or press the key you gave it. An effect lands on the mixer insert you have selected in FL, without you touching the Browser.

An instrument goes onto the selected channel, FL's own rule, and a click asks before it replaces what is there.

The same key in your other DAWs

Give a plugin a key in FL Studio. The same key loads it in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Bitwig Studio, REAPER and Studio Pro, wherever that plugin is installed.

See what runs where

Plugindex tells you when a key only works in the DAW you're in. Logic Pro is Mac only, and Pro Tools on Windows is still in progress.

Set up once, in three steps.

  1. Open Plugindex It installs its FL Studio script by itself, and offers to start when you log in, so FL always finds it.
  2. Turn Plugindex on in FL's MIDI settings Press F10 in FL. Pick Plugindex in the Input list, tick Enable, and set Controller type to Plugindex. Windows Add a port named Plugindex in loopMIDI first, a free app, then open FL again.
  3. Press Index Plugindex fills in your library from FL's own plugin database and photographs each plugin. Mac macOS asks you to allow the photographs first.

Every step and fix for FL Studio

The Plugindex menu. Setup & connection… shows these steps one at a time, and says when FL Studio is connected.
